it may seems overboard, but think:

when a person want to impress someone, he/she also try to dress up right?

whichever country wins the olympic hosting year, they also spend alot of effort and $ to beautify their environment too...

when i look at it this way, it seems perfectly normal...

I think it's a good thing as it leaves a good impression on our visitors (IMF OR not) and it stimulates the economy with the spending on the "beautification" amongst other things.....however the saying on when you have visitors to your home, you'll tidy up is like saying your family members who stays there does not matter as much as the visitors...if you catch my drift...
Still I think it's good to have the flowers and more trees planted. Even Woodlands also was not spared. Trees and shrubs were planted along the road where the MRT tracks ran.
